Operations and Light Rail Info

The METRO light rail system will use state-of-the art light rail vehicles with a modern, streamlined design that offer a number of amenities for passenger comfort, convenience and safety

Features Include

  • Oversized air conditioning units to keep the interior cool and comfortable
  • Tinted windows to block glare and heat
  • Four hanging bike racks in each vehicle
  • Exceeds Americans with Disabilities Act requirements, with convertible space to accommodate four wheelchairs on each vehicle
  • Door entries at the same height as the vehicle platform (no steps or lifts) to ease boarding
  • Closed circuit security cameras on the interior and exterior of each vehicle
  • Passenger-to-operator emergency intercom
  • A quiet, smooth ride
  • Audible and visual passenger announcements

METRO light rail vehicles are being manufactured by Kinkisharyo International in Osaka, Japan. More than 50 percent of the parts on the vehicles are American made and final assembly of the vehicles will occur in Arizona.

Light Rail Operations Begin in December 2008

  • Peak period frequency: 10 minutes
  • Off-peak midday frequency: 20 to 30 minutes
  • Operating hours: 18-20 hours/day
  • Opening day ridership: 26,000
  • 2020 ridership: 50,000

Light Rail Assembly, Maintenance and Operator Positions

METRO has contracted with Kinkisharyo for train assembly and maintenance, and with Alternate Concepts, Inc. for operations. These two firms will conduct their own hiring. Information on employment opportunities with Kinkisharyo and Alternate Concepts will be posted as it becomes available.
