METRO's 2008 Safety Campaign

In Spring 2008, METRO will gradually begin expanding its vehicle testing activities east- and westward from its current test track on Washington Street between 44th and 56th streets. At that time, we will begin a public education campaign on the safety rules for light rail. Our goal is to raise the awareness of rail safety and encourage safe behaviors among all Valley residents. To create an effect and sustainable effort, METRO will use the communication resources of our partner cities and will seek communication partnerships with the Valley's businesses, neighborhood groups, and community organizations, and with the news media. Our campaign will include a special component for youth education, grades K-12 and will be developed with the assistance and support of Valley educators.

The most common light rail vehicle accident types for on-street systems are:

  • Left and right-turning vehicles crossing illegally and in front of light rail vehicle
  • Red light running
  • Pedestrians walking in front of moving light rail vehicle
