Draft Policies and Procedures

Title: ALTERNATIVE WORK SCHEDULE/OFFICE COVERAGE / No: 6.19
Issued: January 1, 1996 / Reissued: March 1, 2000

I. Purpose:

To provide employees guidance on Alternative Work Schedules and define RPTA’s office coverage procedures to RPTA employees.

II. Policy:

A. An Alternative Work Schedule became effective July 1, 1995. The 9/80 work schedule is the standard and is based upon a nine-hour work day. Employees are expected to work nine hours per day for eight days, and work one eight hour day in each consecutive two-week period and receive one earned day off (EDO). Employees shall be required to use the EDO on its regularly scheduled day during a paid time off period or the day immediately following a holiday. EDOs are required to be taken on the day scheduled unless prior approval is secured from your supervisor. EDOs are not eligible to be banked or stored for later use. Alternative Work Schedules are available to be changed each calendar quarters and may only be changed within each quarter with the approval of your supervisor. A 5/40 (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., five days per week) work schedule is also available. Other work schedules may be offered with approval from the Executive Director.

B. It is vital for management to ensure adequate office coverage. Therefore, every department will attempt to have a minimum of one person physically on-site at RPTA at all times. This should ensure adequate departmental coverage and ability to provide service. In the event of an emergency situation, the most senior on-site RPTA employee will be contacted. At all times, management or executive level employees will designate one director or manager as "on call" especially upon a day in which Earned Days Off (EDO) are normally utilized. This will assist receptionists in directing important telephone calls or visitors. If this person cannot be on-site, it is required that he/she be immediately available by telephone, pager or cellular phone.
