U.S. EPA Guidelines for Program ID Usage You Earned the Right to Use the Name and Logo
Status of the Service Mark EPA owns the term Best Workplaces for Commuters SM and is in the process of registering the trademark. EPA is registering the trademark to protect all parties planning to use the name and logo including qualified employers. The small “SM” after Commuters stands for Service Mark, which means that the mark applies to a service rather than a product, which would use the more common TM instead. Why Use the Name and Logo An increasing number of qualifying employers across the country are beginning to use the Best Workplaces for Commuters SM name and logo. These employers use the name and logo many reasons including: Help distinguish themselves in recruiting new employees Help inform their existing employees about the outstanding commuter benefits they have Gain recognition for corporate citizenship in reducing traffic, air pollution, and “parking spillover” into adjacent neighborhoods. Opportunities to Use the Name and Logo We encourage you to use the Best Workplaces for Commuters SM name and program logo. Here are some of the ways you can use the name and program logo:
This service-marked name and program logo will help distinguish you from the competition and demonstrate your commitment to enhancing the quality of life for your employees and the community where you are based. Worksites Authorized to Use Name and Logo Only worksites designated by EPA Best Workplaces for Commuters SM may use the name and logo. If your entire company or organization has been designated by EPA as one of the Best Workplaces for Commuters SM, you may use the name and logo in any materials associated with the entire company or organization. If, however, only select worksites (e.g. certain offices or departments) are designated by EPA as Best Workplaces for Commuters SM, only those worksites may use the name and logo. For example, ABC Corporation has a Sacramento office that houses the company’s Research Department and that worksite qualifies as one of the Best Workplaces for Commuters. ABC’s Research Department may use the name and logo as described above. For employers with only select worksites designated as Best Workplaces for CommutersSM, the headquarters office may not use the name and logo except in references to the qualifying worksites. In the example, ABC can mention that its Sacramento office has been designated. (e.g. “We are proud that our Sacramento office recently qualified as one of the Best Workplaces for Commuters SM”). ABC’s headquarters office, however, may not use the logo implying the entire company is designated as one of the Best Workplaces for Commuters SM. Proper Usage of the Name and Logo The program name and logos may not be altered or distorted in appearance. The program name and logos may never be used in any manner that would imply EPA endorsement of a company, its products or its services. The service mark should occur in superscript after the word “Commuters” Please note the proper use of the term Best Workplaces for Commuters SM. Each word is capitalized, except the “for”. The word “Workplaces” is one word and is plural. For example, an employer may not refer to itself as “The Best Workplace for Commuters”.
