GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY
This is a temporary position and does not receive benefits.
The Metro Light Rail Summer Intern is responsible for routine project development and design and construction work assignments and activities. Typical duties includes reviewing engineering design plans, preparing spreadsheet, reviewing concept drawings, conducting field inspections, cost estimating, and participating in planning efforts, and conducting research. This positions primary objective is to assist students with gaining practical Civil Engineering work experience in preparation for future success in the profession.
ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE:
The Metro Light Rail Engineering Intern reports to the Metro Project Manager-Facilities Engineer.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in the designs, development, and updates of plans, specifications, and estimates for the Northwest Extension Project.
- Provides support to assigned project managers by assisting in identifying critical engineering issues; evaluating alternative solutions; and providing recommendations for the preferred approach.
- Assist in the review of analytical reports and correspondence on rail construction projects for conformance to internal policies and procedures.
- Review submittals, meetings, and other construction activities with other departments, outside agencies, and utilities.
- Conducts engineering research, and field inspections of design projects.
- Performs other duties of similar nature and level as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Currently Enrolled in a Civil Engineering, Engineering Technology, or construction management program with an emphasis on transportation, transportation planning, or construction management. All candidates under consideration must have completed at least 2 years of course study.

Knowledge and Skills:
Knowledge of:
- Transit operations;
- Civil engineering theory and principles;
- Modern methods, materials, and techniques as applied to construction and maintenance of rail;
- Advanced mathematical techniques, such as trigonometry, calculus, and coordinate geometry;
Skill in:
- Using computer and related software applications;
- Auto CADD;
- Applying knowledge to theoretical and practical civil engineering problems with versatility, judgment, and perception;
- Adapting principles, methods, and techniques of related professional disciplines;
- Observing or monitoring objects or data to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards;
- Interpreting graphic instructions such as blueprints, schematic drawings, layouts or other visual aids;
- Reviewing engineering designs and construction documents;
- Communicating in order to interact with coworkers, supervisor, and the general public at a level sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
Physical Demands:
Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, talking, and hearing.
Incumbents may be subjected to extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, intense noises, and travel.
Work Environment:
Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
