ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE:

This position is safety sensitive and subject to Valley Metro RPTA’s Drug & Alcohol Program.  Applicants for positions defined as safety sensitive are required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and, subsequent to commencement of employment, will be subject to random, post accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty, and follow up testing.

The Signal & Communications Systems Technician performs complex and varied duties in the maintenance and repair of signaling and rail safety systems, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisitions (SCADA) hardware and network devices, track switching equipment, signal systems circuits, and other electrical equipment; and performs related work as assigned. Troubleshooting, analyzing and isolating malfunctions, conducting inspections, testing, modifying, maintaining and repairing signaling and communications systems equipment.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Repairs electrical, electronic, mechanical and hydraulic systems of LRT wayside signaling, communications and fare collection systems equipment; 
  • Tests and troubleshoots electronic components and systems, repairs or orders and replaces components, rewires systems, and tests equipment prior to placing back into service;
  • Responds to service emergencies providing online troubleshooting and repair of all electronic, electro-mechanical equipment including located in wayside facilities and passenger stations communications and fare collection equipment;
  • Maintains parts inventory and computer inventory records;
  • Compiles reports indicating mileage or track inspected, repairs made, and equipment requiring replacement;
  • Performs preventative maintenance on all signaling, communications and fare collection apparatus;
  • Investigates and locates problems or failures and take the proper corrective action;
  • Attends safety and training meetings; participates in emergency preparedness systems;
  • Maintenance and repair of LRT wayside signaling, communication and SCADA system equipment;

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

An Associates Degree in electrical/electronic engineering technology from a two (2) year Technical College or institute, plus two (2) years of related work experience. Equivalent combination of training, education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties such as those listed above. Light Rail Transit experience is required.

Medical Examination: Employment for safety-sensitive positions is contingent on passing a physical examination performed by our examining physician.

Background Investigation:
Employment is contingent upon the results of a background check.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid Arizona driver’s license. Position requires the ability to maintain insurability under METRO’s Vehicle Insurance Policy. 
  • Position requires the incumbent to successfully pass the safety and track worker protection certification and to maintain ongoing education and training requirements of the position.

Knowledge and Skills:

Knowledge of:

  • Safety practices as they pertain to electronic systems;
  • AC/DC electrical systems, principles of analog and digital electronics, electronic control circuitry and associated mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic systems, testing and inspection methods/tools;
  • Analog and digital electronics, and electronic control circuits;

Skill in:

  • Safely using and maintaining hand and power tools and test equipment related to the work;
  • Maintaining accurate records of work performed;
  • Ability to read schematics and blueprints for electrical and electronic control;
  • Analyzing malfunction in electrical, electronic and electromechanical system and repair;
  • Ability to perform maintenance repair, troubleshooting, rebuild and overhaul of rail transit vehicles and subsystems; Using initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines;
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work;
  • Operating telephone communications system

Physical Demands:

  • Positions in this class typically require:   climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
  • Incumbent must perform heavy manual labor, frequently lifting up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds with the assistance of applicable equipment or other employees.

Work Environment:

  • Work extended shifts or be called back in emergency situations.
  • May work from lift trucks, ladders, and other elevating devices.
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions. Incumbents may be subjected to risk of electrical shock, toxic or caustic chemicals, moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, and intense noise levels.
