Fares & Passes
Fare On METRO light rail
METRO light rail and Valley Metro bus share the same fare system. An all-day pass for $2.50 is good on both local bus and light rail. All-day passes expire at 2:59 a.m. on the following day. If you buy a pass for light rail / local bus, and then decide to take a Express or RAPID bus you simply pay the difference for the upgrade in cash on the bus.
METRO uses a proof-of-payment system. Pass cards or paper passes must be activated at station platforms or on buses before boarding the train. Passengers who fail to validate tickets or passes are subject to fines.
Reduced fares are available to youths ages 6-18, seniors 65 and over, and persons with a disability. Children five years old and under ride free. Reduced fare applies to local service only.

Fare Enforcement
METRO operates on a proof-of-payment system. All passengers are subject to fare inspection at any time and must present an activated pass upon request. You must activate your pass at the METRO station before boarding the train. There are four ways to activate your pass:
* Choose the “activate” option when you buy your pass at the vending machine
* Place a pass purchased earlier into the vending machine’s activation slot
* Tap your Platinum Pass on the tap-screen located near the station entrance ramp
* Activate your pass on the bus by dipping it in the fare box.
METRO fare inspectors will regularly patrol the system and will ask passengers at random to produce a valid pass. Violators are subject to fines ranging from $50 to $500 and may lose their transit privileges.
