Proposition 400 funds have been used in this Regional Transportation Plan project
RTP Expansion
Valley Metro is working with the City of Chandler on plans to provide LINK service in their community. Beginning in July 2010, the LINK route will begin at the new Chandler regional park-and-ride lot adjacent to Tumbleweed Park on Germann Road and Hamilton Street and travel north on Arizona Avenue/Country Club Drive to Main Street in Mesa and connect to METRO Light Rail at the Sycamore Transit Center. It is anticipated that LINK service will run every 15 to 30 minutes during the same hours as METRO rail service and will stop only at major intersections, or approximately every mile. Several enhancements are being planned to make the service faster including low floor buses with one entrance and two exit doors, signal priority which will reduce the amount of time buses are stopped at red lights and enhanced stations with dynamic message signs displaying real time information on arrival of next bus. The Valley Metro LINK service is being funded by Proposition 400, the half-cent sales tax that was approved by voters in 2004 to provide transit and transportation enhancements in Maricopa County.
The Regional Transportation Plan includes bus service on arterial streets that will function as an extension of the METRO Light Rail line. The LINK is one of these services, commonly called BRT - Bus Rapid Transit. 5 BRT Routes are included in the 20-year plan:
- Main Street Arterial BRT (Valley Metro LINK)
- Arizona Avenue Arterial BRT (Service beginning 2010)
- Scottsdale/Rural Arterial BRT (2013)
- South Central Avenue Arterial BRT (2015)
- Chandler Boulevard Arterial BRT (2023)
