Northwest

Notice:  As a result of the economic downturn, construction of the Northwest Extension will be completed in phases.  Transit funding comes from sales tax revenue, of which collections are down more than 20 percent.  This dramatic decrease has caused the city of Phoenix to adjust the project schedule.  The first phase will complete all right-of-way real estate acquisition and construction of the planned landscaping barriers to secure the surrounding neighborhoods by 2010.  The economic situation will be closely monitored and light rail construction will begin as soon as it is financially feasible.  The city of Phoenix and METRO remain committed to this project.  If you have any further questions, please contact Albert Santana with the city at 602-534-7878 or (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

The Northwest Extension is the first extension of the light rail starter line identified in the Regional Transportation Plan adopted by the Maricopa Association of Governments. Most of the funding for Phase I of the extension comes from a half-cent sales tax extension approved by city of Phoenix voters in 2000 with additional monies coming from regional sources . Overall, the Regional Transportation Plan identifies 57-miles of major light rail/high capacity transit corridors to be implemented by 2030 see map.

The approximately $300 million Northwest Extension Phase I project will include 3.2-miles that will travel north along 19th Avenue to Dunlap Avenue. It includes three light rail stations, and one park and ride facility, and will connect with bus services at Bethany Home Road, Glendale Avenue, Northern Avenue and Dunlap Avenue. Within an easy walk to the transit stations, the extension will serve nearly 20,000 residents, more than 20,000 employees and nearly 10,000 housing units; more than 14% of the households served by the extension are without an automobile compared to seven percent county-wide.
