Phoenix — It is no secret that Phoenix has one scorcher of a summer.  To help residents stay healthy and cool during the hottest time of the year, the Phoenix Public Transit Department and Phoenix Fire Department have joined forces to promote this year’s Personal Cool campaign.  The campaign provides information about the benefits of dressing for hot weather, using sunscreen and staying hydrated.  Giveaways at the events will include free bottled water, lip balm, and other skin protection items.  Events will be held at Phoenix Central Station, 300 N. Central Avenue, and at Sunnyslope Transit Center, 8927 N. Third Street (SE corner of Dunlap Ave. & 3rd St.).

“Our passengers are often walking or waiting for public transit in the sun, so the Personal Cool campaign is an excellent opportunity to remind people of the best ways to prepare for their trips,” said Debbie Cotton, Phoenix Public Transit Director.  “Parents of small children and senior citizens especially need to be mindful of how the heat can take a severe toll.”

Problems that can develop from prolonged exposure to heat include dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and even heat stroke.  If left untreated, they can cause permanent physical damage or even death.  But by wearing a hat or using an umbrella for shade; by drinking water often and before becoming thirsty; and by planning trips accordingly to spend the least amount of time outdoors can prevent the most serious consequences of prolonged exposure to hot weather.

The danger of heat-related health problems is that once you see symptoms, you’re already dealing with the possibility of a medical emergency,” noted Phoenix Fire Chief Bob Kahn.  “The best way to stay safe is to take preventative steps, and never reach that point.”
