April is Valley Bike Month

Grab your helmets and get ready to ride! April is Valley Bike Month featuring four weeks packed with bicycling events, contests and safety education. The purpose of Valley Bike Month is to bring attention to bicycling as a fun, healthy, inexpensive and green way to commute and to encourage new riders to give cycling a try.

Why Ride?

• Bicycling is easy. Ride straight to work or connect to bus or light rail to complete your trip.
• Bicycling improves your health and reduces stress. It burns calories, helps reduce the risk
      of heart disease
and generates stress-battling endorphins.
• Bicycling saves money. On average, cyclists can save up to $20 a day.
• Bicycling is safe. Follow the rules of the road, wear a helmet and always be aware of your surroundings.
• Bicycling is good for the environment. It reduces emissions, fuel consumption and traffic congestion.
• Bicycling is good for local businesses. Cyclists tend to shop local and
often, supporting small neighborhood businesses which boosts the local economy.

About Valley Bike Month: Valley Bike Month is held each year to bring attention to bicycling as a fun, inexpensive and safe transportation method. Cities, bike clubs and Trip Reduction Program employers work together to promote bicycling for commuting and for fun. Sponsors include the Arizona Departments of Environmental Quality and Transportation, Maricopa Association of Governments, and Maricopa County Air Quality Department.

About Valley Metro: Valley Metro provides eco-friendly public transit options to residents of greater Phoenix and Maricopa County including the planning and operations of a regional bus system and the development and operations of light rail. In Fiscal Year 2013, total ridership for the system was 73.4 million passengers, which set a new record for bus and light rail boardings. The first 20 miles of light rail opened December 2008. Seven light rail extensions are planned or are under construction that will create a 60-mile system by 2034. Valley Metro also offers transit options including alternative transportation programs for seniors and people with disabilities, commuter vanpools, online carpool matching, bus trip mapping, bicycle safety and telework assistance. Two Boards of Directors set the policy direction for the agency with the intent of advancing the regional public transit system.
