Glendale Student Wins Art Contest

Cactus High School student, Sofia Garcia, is the winner of Valley Metro’s 2017 Design a Transit Wrap contest. Garcia, a high school senior, also won in 2015 as a Sophomore.

“I was really inspired by how public transportation brings people together,” said Sofia Garcia. “It connects people from all walks of life. They come together for a moment on their individual journey. It’s really special.” Her artwork, titled The Journey Begins Here, will be featured on a bus and light rail train for one year.

Garcia’s design was chosen out of more than 150 entries submitted by high school students across the Valley.

“Valley Metro opened a ton of doors for me,” said Garcia. “It’s amazing how much self-confidence winning the art contest gave me.” Garcia is planning to attend Arizona State University this fall on an art scholarship and hopes to pursue a career in graphic design.

“It’s an opportunity to showcase our talented youth,” said Peoria Vice Mayor and Valley Metro board member Jon Edwards. “Sofia’s design, which really captures the essence of public transit, will travel the streets for thousands to enjoy each day.”

The contest encourages high school students to create artwork that promotes public transit from their own point of view.

Gabriela Guzman, Coronado High School, and Jaquelyn Swartz, Arcadia High School, received second and third place for their designs.

Valley Metro also offers transit options including alternative transportation programs for seniors and people with disabilities, commuter vanpools, online carpool matching, bus trip mapping, bicycle safety and telework assistance. Two Boards of Directors set the policy direction for the agency with the intent of advancing the regional public transit system.
