Valley Metro Rail Board Elects New Officers

PHOENIX, AZ – The Valley Metro Rail Board of Directors has elected new officers for the Fiscal Year 2015-16 term.  Elected to serve on July 1, 2015:

Chair – Phoenix Councilmember Thelda Williams
Vice Chair – Tempe Mayor Mark Mitchell

“Investing in public transportation is an investment in our future,” said Phoenix Councilmember and now Valley Metro Rail Board Chair Thelda Williams. “As Chair, I would like to continue our momentum of delivering rail transit projects expeditiously and with solid budget controls. The transit rider and citizen can rely on a safe, reliable and well-built transit system. In the coming year, we will experience significant advancements to our total transit network.”

Valley Metro Rail operates, maintains and expands the light rail/high-capacity system in the greater Phoenix area. The Board is comprised of five local elected officials who provide policy direction for rail service.

About Valley Metro: Valley Metro provides eco-friendly public transit options to residents of greater Phoenix and Maricopa County including the planning and operations of a regional bus system and the development and operations of light rail. In Fiscal Year 2014, total ridership for the system was 72 million passengers. The first 20 miles of light rail opened December 2008. Seven light rail extensions are planned or are under construction that will create a 60-mile system by 2034. Valley Metro also offers transit options including alternative transportation programs for seniors and people with disabilities, commuter vanpools, online carpool matching, bus trip mapping, bicycle safety and telework assistance. Two Boards of Directors set the policy direction for the agency with the intent of advancing the regional public transit system.
