Walk Month Encourages Residents to Be BRIGHT

PHOENIX (October 11, 2010) — Walk Month kicks off this October as Valley residents are encouraged to “Be BRIGHT” and incorporate walking into their everyday lives to boost their health, gain knowledge of pedestrian safety, and participate in community walk event. Walking is the ultimate, environmental friendly and free “alternative mode of transportation.” Avoiding just 10 miles of driving every week would eliminate 500 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions a year!

The Be BRIGHT campaign reminds Valley residents to:

  • Be BRIGHT in their health choices - walk your way to better health.
  • Be BRIGHT in their clothing choices – wear reflective and/or bright colored clothing when walking.
  • Be BRIGHT in their thinking – know pedestrian rules and map out a safe route.

Be BRIGHT not only encourages participation in these activities but gives residents the tools necessary to succeed. Residents interested in participating in nearly 40 area walk events this fall can log on to While there, site visitors can also sign up to participate in the Be BRIGHT initiative, log walk/bike trips, enter for a chance to win donated prizes, and learn more about pedestrian and bike safety.

“Be BRIGHT” is the Valley’s bicycle & pedestrian safety education campaign funded by Transportation Enhancement grants administered by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT).
