JANUARY TRANSIT SERVICE CHANGES Q & Aback to top

Fares were recently increased. Why is service being cut?

The regional transit system is funded by a mix of regional and local sales taxes. Due to a slowing economy, cities are forced to make these service changes beginning Jan. 25, 2010. Fares cover approximately 25 percent of the cost of operating a bus route. With ongoing cost increases to operate service, the fare increase was not enough to cover the revenue lost from the sales tax decline.

What routes will be affected?

A majority of the service changes affect the City of Tempe and the West Valley.

TEMPE

Changes occurring within the City of Tempe include routes: 30, 62, 65, 66, 76, 77, 81, 92 and Orbit Circulators (Earth, Jupiter, Mars, Mercury and Venus). Route 92 has been eliminated, but portions of the route will now be served by Routes 62 and 65 and the new Route 48, traveling along 48th Street and Rio Salado Parkway into downtown Tempe. Other changes include reduced frequency and hours of operation during non-peak hours and weekends. For detailed Tempe information, including maps and a service change video, visit www.tempe.gov/tim. Or, visit ValleyMetro.org for a comprehensive list of Valley-wide transit service changes.

WEST VALLEY

Changes occurring within the West Valley include routes: 29A, 41, 41A, 131-START and Grand Ave. Limited. Service on Route 131-START has been eliminated east of the Avondale Civic Center, but passengers can continue east to Desert Sky Mall via Route 29A. Route 41A has been eliminated, but portions of the route will now be served by Route 41, extending west to 107th Ave with service on Camelback Rd. from 107th Ave. east to 99th Ave. Lastly, the Grand Avenue Limited will complete westbound service at the Peoria Park-and-Ride, eliminating the afternoon extension to the Surprise Park-and-Ride. For assistance with planning your trip in light of recent changes, please call 602.253.5000.

Route 41A (Avondale) has been eliminated. What are my options?

The Route 41 (Indian School) has been extended west to 107th Avenue and now provides service on Camelback Rd. from 107th Ave. east to 99th Ave. Passengers west of 107th Ave. may call 602.253.5000 for assistance in planning their trip.

Will METRO light rail schedules be impacted on January 25th?

No, METRO light rail schedules will not be affected at this time. Check the Transit Book or ValleyMetro.org for time schedules and station locations.

When will I be able to see the new schedules?

Revised schedules are currently available for viewing at ValleyMetro.org or in the January Transit book, available on board buses and at Transit Centers and libraries the week of January 18.

Transit is my only means of transportation and because of these service cuts, I can no longer get to work. What are my options?

Valley Metro provides more ways for you to get to work other than transit, like carpool and vanpool. Visit ShareTheRide.ValleyMetro.org to find a carpool partner or vanpool with available seats near your home or work location. For more information, call 602.262.RIDE.

Will my express bus or RAPID service be impacted on January 25?

No, there are no changes to these routes at this time.
