Unveiling of Student Art on Bus

PHOENIX (April 14, 2009) – High school art students across the Valley competed recently to have their artwork exhibited on a moving canvas for the 10th Annual Bus Wrap Design Contest. image
“We want to engage high school students and help them understand the connection between transit and the environment,” said David A. Boggs, Valley Metro executive director. “They are investors in the public transportation system. Students are also our future riders.

The winning design was produced by Juan Marzeleno, a senior at Phoenix Union’s Trevor Browne High School. In addition to receiving his winning artwork on a 40-foot bus for one year, he will take home various prizes.

“Juan’s entry was chosen because his imaginative design has rural, urban, and global elements that pulls in the viewer,” said Dolores Nolan, Valley Metro transit education manager. “The judges loved that his message is green and cleverly evokes the beloved child’s rhyme The Wheels on Bus.”

Second and third place winners will also be recognized at the unveiling:  Leon Jimenez, Senior at Crestview College Prep and Sheana Mast at Northwest Christian School.

The unveiling event on Tues., April 20 begins at 11 a.m. at Trevor G. Browne High School and will include a brief presentation with remarks from Valley Metro Board Chair, Councilmember Michael Johnson.

Marzeleno’s artwork was chosen out of more than 125 entries submitted by public and charter schools across the Valley. Honorable mentions were handed to students from Bourgade High School, Central High School and Mesquite High School.

This program is sponsored by bluemedia and Cerreta Realty Group.
