With warm temperatures and beautiful mountains, hiking is a popular pastime in the Valley. Your next great hike is a short ride away with Valley Metro. They may not go as high as Pinnacle Peak, but these hiking spots feature great climbs and impressive views.
Hole in the Rock is a special landmark in Papago Park near the Phoenix Zoo and Desert Botanical Gardens. It’s a short walk away from the Zoo’s bus stop, which you can reach via the 3 or 56 local bus line. The trail up the sandstone butte is perfect for beginners. The trail attracts hikers even on cloudy or rainy days. Enjoy a bird’s eye view of Governor Hunt’s Tomb, and once you come back down you can have a picnic at the Papago Lakes.
Tempe Butte, or “A” mountain as it’s more commonly known, is super easy to get to by light rail. One you arrive at Veteran’s Way/College Ave station you’re there! The trail provides you scenic views of downtown Tempe and Tempe Town Lake. I’ve made the climb myself, and while it’s not as long as some trails, it can get steep and challenging. I found myself stopping at several points to take a sip of water and get pictures of the wonderful views of Tempe. The fun doesn’t stop when you reach the end of your adventure. The trails at “A” mountain can lead you to Mill Avenue, the heart of downtown Tempe.
Next time you dust off your hiking boots, give these trails a try! It’s a great way to exercise while seeing the beauty of the Valley.
