It’s that time of year again! How about taking a break from shopping online this year and shop locally? If you’re a last-minute shopper like me, there are many destinations along light rail that can help you finish early this season.
Downtown Phoenix is my favorite hot spot. There are places like Bunky Boutique close to the McDowell/Central Ave station, which sells unique gifts made locally. The Newton Shopping Center, near Central Ave/Camelback station, is a recently built complex with stores like Changing Hands Bookstore and Southwest Gardener.
Downtown Mesa is a gem for finding deals and you can get there by taking the train to any Main Street station at Country Club Dr., Center St., or Mesa Dr. Many Mesa business are offering specials until December 23rd.
Check out the Melrose District near the 7th Ave/Indian School station. The shopping district is small, but is host to various intriguing stores. They include Bizarre Guitar, an award-winning instrument warehouse that sells new and used guitars, amps, drums, and PA systems.
If you are looking for more creative gifts, artists from all over the world come together at the Tempe Festival of the Arts in the Mill Avenue district the first weekend in December. There you can find sculptures, paintings, and many other works of art, while enjoying family friendly events. The World Bazaar presented by the International Rescue Committee returns to Phoenix on Saturday, December 7 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. with 50 vendors selling homemade goods, food and art from around the world. You can access the event by taking the light rail to 19th Ave/Camelback station.
If you consider yourself an avid online gift shopper like me, consider shopping local at small businesses this year and help your community grow. There are many holiday discounts available and shopping locally can help you save the cost of shipping.
