Valley Metro utilizes fogging to disinfect light rail, buses | Valley Metro

Safety has always been one of the top priorities for Valley Metro. With the outbreak of COVID-19, safety is more important than ever.

In order to ensure the safety and health of essential workers, who still require public transportation to get to jobs and other essential locations, Valley Metro has explored ways to keep light rail trains and buses sanitized with anti-viral solutions. Along with regular upkeep on trains cleaned throughout the day, added cleaning measures have been implemented.

Beginning in March, trains and buses are being cleaned by a technique called “fogging.” Fogging is a top of the line technique when it comes to disinfection and decontamination.

According to First Transit Assistant General Manager Michael Thomas, buses are being fogged three times a week. High touch areas are also wiped down daily with the same quality disinfectant that is used during the fogging process.

It takes around 15 minutes for each bus to go through the cleaning process. Thomas says the biggest advantage of this disinfecting system is the coverage, fogging completely covers surfaces, not just the top of the surface.

Full Spectrum Disinfection, who performs the process, uses a technology called Steramist. According to the company’s website, the visible mist or fog created is composed of Reactive Oxygen Species. The technology is not harmful to the environment. For this reason, it is the perfect way to clean and disinfect Valley Metro rail and buses.

The crew walks through the train spraying from cab to cab and everything in between. That includes the floor, the seats, the windows and handrails. The fogging technology allows the disinfecting solution to hit more than 99 percent of the area.

The fogging process will continue at Valley Metro throughout the year as it has been shown to be the best practice when trying to keep passengers and operators safe.
