Riders on train platform

Valley Metro is always wanting to learn more about our riders so that we can better serve our community. That is why we conduct surveys to get the answers straight from our customers. One of more recent surveys took place back in spring of 2019. We received responses from more than 20,000 people.

The survey included many questions ranging from age and income to the purpose of their trip. This information is invaluable to Valley Metro planners. The survey allows them to see where people are coming and going, allowing them to change our service routes to better suit our riders' needs.

Here is some interesting facts that we discovered from the survey:

  • 51% of all passengers say no one in their household owns a vehicle.
  • More than 85% of riders surveyed say they walked from their homes to the bus stop or light rail station and then walked to their destination. Most of those riders say they don’t need to walk more than a quarter mile from their homes to reach a Valley Metro stop or station.
  • More than 40% of riders told us they use Valley Metro to get to and from work.
  • The average distance people take on their trip is between five and six miles for bus riders and between eight and nine miles for light rail riders.
  • More than half of riders don’t need to transfer during their trip.

What this data demonstrates is the positive impact Valley Metro has on people’s lives. We provide a cheaper way to get around the Valley that helps cut down on pollution. Riders are taking advantage of this, choosing to not buy or use gas-guzzling vehicles and let our experienced operators take them to work. With our far-reaching system, a bus stop or light rail station is around the corner for most riders. While we are happy with the results, we are always looking for ways to improve. If you have any ideas on how we can better serve you, please contact our customer service department, either by phone or online. The contact information can be found here.
