Central High School students cross the road.

Don’t look now, but back-to-school season is here. Everywhere you turn, there are back-to-school specials, commercials and Facebook postings. At Valley Metro, we want to make sure everyone has an excellent school year and that starts with safety. As classes resume, there will be more traffic including students walking and riding bikes near buses and light rail. We encourage drivers and students to always be alert and aware of their surroundings and to follow these simple tips:

• Stop, look and listen around light rail tracks and bus stops.

• When crossing streets, always look both ways and cross only at crosswalks.

• Never try to outrun a light rail train or bus – it’s dangerous and not worth the risk to save a few minutes.

There are also benefits to being a student and riding public transit, you get a discount! Students ages 6-18 are eligible for reduced fares, which is half-off the regular price ($2.00 for an 1-Day Pass or $32 for a 31-Day pass). Students need to provide one of the following forms of identification to receive Student Fare:

1.) Driver’s license or state-issued ID card

2.) Student ID with photo age or current school year

3.) Valley Metro Reduced Fare ID card

Student Fare is available in Phoenix and Tempe.
