Expansion of the Rail Operations & Maintenance Center to provide the necessary space to operate, maintain and store more than 90 rail vehicles.

  • In January 2019, the Valley Metro Board awarded an $82 million Design-Build contract to Hensel Phelps
  • In February 2019, Valley Metro gave Hensel Phelps Limited Notice to Proceed on Design work
  • Construction is expected to begin in the summer of 2019

The Rail Operations and Maintenance Center (OMC), built in 2006 for the original initial 20-mile light rail line, provides office space and facilities to store, inspect, maintain, clean, and operate trains. With the expansion of the Valley Metro Rail system, the OMC also needs to expand. The expansion includes additional storage track, maintenance buildings, cleaning structures, and staff facilities. In 2017, Valley Metro completed a needs assessment to develop a conceptual design for the expansion of the facility to meet the future fleet size and needs. In 2018, preliminary engineering of the expansion plans was completed. A Design-Build procurement was issued to bring on a contractor to design and construct the expanded facilities.
