Phoenix

Phase II of the Northwest Extension will extend light rail west on Dunlap Avenue from 19th Avenue, north on 25th Avenue and across I-17 with a terminus near Metrocenter Mall.

The Northwest Phase II Extension is advancing to the next phase of design, with the project's construction contractor, Kiewit-McCarthy, and seven artists. The artists will design public art elements along the extension. It is anticipated a final design team will be approved by the Valley Metro Board of Directors in spring 2018.

  • A public meeting to meet the artists working on the project was held in March 2018. Art will be incorporated at the stations, power substation and park-and-ride.
  • The project team is preparing the Environmental Assessment (EA) to evaluate the environmental elements associated with the project. The Environmental Assessment will be complete in 2018.
  • One component to the next phase of design is gathering utility data and conducting various infrastructure inspections. Work to locate underground utilities along the corridor is expected to be complete in 2018.

In 2004, the Phoenix City Council approved the Northwest Extension to extend light rail from 19th Ave/Montebello to 25th Ave. and Mountain View Rd. In 2007, the route was divided into two phases. The 3.2-mile Phase I on 19th Ave. from Montebello to Dunlap Ave. opened on March 19, 2016.

In 2016, the Phoenix City Council approved accelerating segments of the future high-capacity/light rail transit system. With the acceleration, Northwest Phase II will open in 2023 rather than 2026. The advancement is funded by Transportation 2050, a 35-year, multi-modal transportation plan approved by the Phoenix voters in 2015. Click here to learn more about T2050.
