Exploring Flexible Transit Alternatives in the West Valley
The West Valley Flexible Transit Study is exploring the potential for flexible transit service around the West Valley. Flexible transit options, much like Uber and Lyft, would provide on-demand service within a set zone hailed by phone or app. Relative to fixed route transit, corner-to-corner service reduces walking time and distance, and real time vehicle tracking reduces idle wait time. Flexible transit is generally better suited to serve suburban neighborhoods with lower population and development density than fixed routes.
Background
The study area encompasses parts of 11 West Valley cities and county islands. The study focuses on ways to create local transit services across cities in the West Valley. Travel demand throughout the 500-mile project area is being studied using a variety of methods, including travel demand modeling, land-use analysis and workforce commuting patterns. The Study will provide recommendations for flexible transit service zones with accompanying service standards, cost estimates and ridership projections.
